Area Of Funding
How many electrical devices are in your brain?
The human brain is made up of a complex network of neurons – 86 billion of them.
These neurons serve as the building blocks of the nervous system, transmitting information to and from the brain and throughout the body.
Progressive degeneration and/or death of our cells can cause neurodegenerative diseases – including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and Huntington’s disease.
Neurodegeneration
Brain damage caused by neurological and neurodegenerative conditions can affect cognitive functions such as memory, language and the ability to do everyday tasks like planning and reasoning. Neuropsychological tests which assess these functions and identify the extent of damage are currently paper-based, complex, difficult and time-consuming, yet thousands of these tests must be carried out every year at The National Hospital.
Current initiatives in this funding area:
We have funded a number of projects in this field including the digitisation of complex, paper-based neuropsychological tests to link with MRI brain images. We also funded a form of ‘mental physiotherapy’ where patients learned to control a specific part of their brain to improve their Parkinson’s symptoms.
