Meet Dr Hadi Manji

Consultant Neurologist and Honorary Senior Lecturer

My special interests in neurology are neurological infectious diseases such as HIV, tropical neurological disorders and encephalitis. I am also part of the MRC Centre for Neuromuscular Diseases as I have an interest in peripheral nerve disorders

How long have you worked at the hospital?

I was a registrar here in 1992, then senior registrar from 1995 to 1997 when I was appointed consultant – so a long time!

How does your work make a positive impact?

By improving the lives of my patients

What is most challenging about your job?

The pressure of time – it’s never enough.

What is most rewarding about your job?

Seeing patients, making diagnoses and treating them, In the last 20 years neurology has moved great strides in the treatment of neurological diseases. This is now very exciting because, for the first time, we are able to treat genetic neurological disorders which would have been unthinkable when I was a junior neurologist.

How has your department benefitted from funds raised by The National Brain Appeal?

The funds raised by The National Brain Appeal from the gala dinner, ‘Mission Possible’, were used to build a garden terrace for our patients in the day unit; we were also able to fund a number of our nurses to do the MSc course; helped a research registrar and also were able to recruit a new trials coordinator for the MRC unit. Its funding also helped to build the first Neuromuscular Clinical Care Centre (NMCCC) in the UK. The charity has also enabled me to help pay for a trainee neurologist from Kenya to spend 12 months here at Queen Square. She has now gone back home to a very successful career as a neurologist. This training aspect for doctors from all over the world is a very important part of the Queen Square international profile and I would love to see it expanded further.

What could further funding from The National Brain Appeal help your department to achieve?

We need to now expand the hugely successful Neuromuscular Complex Care Centre. And we would like to set up a dedicated department for neuroinfectious diseases.

Do you have a secret skill or hobby?

I have always wanted to be a drummer and am now taking lessons from one our patients here at Queen Square who is a professional. Charlie Watts look out!
