Meet Kai Gardner
Porter
I transport patients around the hospital for procedures like CT scans and MRI scans. I also help to remove unwanted items from offices whenever necessary.
How does your work make a positive impact?
Patients are mostly happy when speaking to me and I love connecting with them as I have a VA (ventriculoatrial shunt) in my head – this drains away any build-up of cerebrospinal fluid into my heart. I was a patient at Great Ormond Street Hospital as a child, so I can really relate to people’s stories when they tell me about themselves and why they’re here.
What is most challenging about your job?
It can be quite tiring, so I always try and stay active.
What is most rewarding about your job?
I enjoy having a chat as I help to move patients around the various parts of the hospital. I like sharing stories with patients that have been through similar situations as me.
Fun fact
I make sauces for friends and family in my spare time – and I have now launched my own business!
