Meet Dr Paul Mulholland
Consultant in medical oncology
My main job is in research and clinical trials. My aim is to find a cure for brain cancer.

How long have you worked at the hospital?
More than 10 years now.
Interesting project you’ve work on
I am currently working on the IPI-GLIO trial, which is searching for an effective treatment for one of the most aggressive brain tumours, glioblastoma.
How does your work make a positive impact?
I’ve been a part of many trials searching for treatments, and ultimately, a cure. We learn from each one and develop a greater understanding of brain cancer each time. Now I have a research group at UCL and I’m trying to bring together all the advances in biology and work together with clinical team at Queen Square to find a cure.
What is most challenging about your job?
It’s tough to deliver such a distressing diagnosis to people. However, this is what drives us forward to find better treatments.
What is most rewarding about your job?
Contributing to an understanding of glioblastoma and being part of the team to find a cure.
How has your team/department benefitted from funds raised by The National Brain Appeal?
We have now set up a clinical trial that’s open in seven centres in the UK and have secured £12m worth of drugs to give to patients on the clinical trial. The National Brain Appeal made this happen by fundraising for the running costs or the trial.
What could further funding from The National Brain Appeal help your team/department to achieve?
We want to collect biological samples from the trial patients and do an analysis to predict who responded to the new immune treatment.
Might the public have seen you on TV or are you famous for anything?
I have been interviewed live on Sky News and have been in The Evening Standard to promote the trial and get people to donate to the appeal.
Can you tell us anything else of interest about yourself?
I once went on tour with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in Mexico as their doctor!
